Although the support for the Wii is almost nonexistent at this point, Nintendo plans to broaden the capabilities of the Wii U with its own App store.
Right now the Wii U is reported to be in a “beta testing” phase and although it is scheduled to make an appearance at CES this year, no significant news breaks are expected until E3 2012.
The Daily is now reporting that the Wii U will feature an in-house app store, more expansive than its DS, 3DS and Wii predecessors. Nintendo has quite the competition nowadays in the average home. With Microsoft and Sony fighting over the top-spot in the motion-sensor market, that Nintendo itself spearheaded, The Wii U will have to offer more than its casual first generation console.
Mobile phones, the new PS Vita, online games and Nintendo’s 3DS are already saturating the casual and portable games market. Nintendo will have to compete with Sony and Microsoft head-on to make onto the entertainment shelf next year.
The full feature app-store could be an excelent way for Nintendo to do this, if third-party clients can make use of the tablet controller that we saw at E3 2010. This could allow more functionality outside gaming and open the Wii U up to more media and functional applications for both hardcore and casual gamers.
Using the tablet to stream movies, writing or interacting on social networks could free up a TV or laptop for others in the house; if the applications can be run correctly. This would obvioulsy be a huge advantage over Microsoft and Sony as they currently stand now with their consoles.
We won’t know everything that the Wii U will be able to do until more announcements are made at E3, but until then you can dream of all those fancy apps that you could be downloading in the future.
