A new series of reports are coming in that the next Playstation console is underway and being developed under the codename “Orbis”.
According to Kotaku, “Orbis” is the working title for the next console being developed by Sony. This after “reliable sources” told the website that Sony is planning a holiday launch for 2013. Unlike the first generation PS3′s however, reports are that the new console won’t be backwards compatible with current PS3 titles.
Just like the rumored next-generation Xbox 360, used-game sales are at the center of the rumors. Kotaku is reporting that it is possible that games on the “Orbis” will be linked to player’s PSN names or the console itself, preventing used games from being fully accessed by a secondhand buyer. The additional content would have to be purchased for a fee, just like online-pass structures are in place now.
Sony has yet to comment on the rumors, most likely they will not. More information on the next batch of consoles would most likely be detailed at E3, though gamers might have to wait until June of 2013 before any announcements are made.
