Microsoft unveiled its line of tablets last week and according to sources close to Microsoft, the new Surface tablet will be wi-fi only at launch. This would mean that initial models will not have 3G or 4G capabilities.
This is according to Bloomberg, who’s sources close to Microsoft wished to be unnamed as the full details of Surface have not been revealed. Apple, the industry leader in tablet devices, also sells a wi-fi only model though customers have the option of including a mobile-phone chip to work with Verizon or AT&T. This decision could be based on cost, wi-fi only models are cheaper (both initially and in the long-run) and more customers buy wi-fi only models currently than devices tied to mobile-carriers.
According to the report from Bloomberg, Microsoft failed to comment on the matter. We will keep you updated as more information on the Surface tablet becomes available.
