European PlayStation boss Jim Ryan considers female gamers the “untapped holy grail” for game publishers. In an interview regarding the upcoming PlayStation Vita, Ryan stated that the device’s overall user-friendliness is paving the way for for Sony to target a larger female audience.
Does anyone else think that this sounds somewhat condescending?
Ryan stated, “That [audience] is obviously the untapped holy grail,” Ryan said. “We’re hopeful that the rather less intimidating interface possibilities that Vita offers may make that market potentially more accessible.
Some of the things as yet unrevealed on the content side are exploring that.”
The PS Vita will also focus more on younger gamers: “You won’t see that so much in 2012, and in 2013 we’ll still be very much at the core of it, but shortly after that a lot of the business strategy will be [based] around targeting a somewhat younger demographic.”
I know Sony’s intentions are good, but as my EiC Sarah can tell you, I’m sure female gamers don’t need a “less intimidating” interface to play around with. New gamers? Now that’s a whole other story…
