Although it is just a prototype, or early dev-kit, the leaked images of the ‘Durango’ development platform have been confirmed to be authentic by other developers working on the device.
The images were posted by an anonymous developer with the handle DaE on the ASSEMblergames forum. The simple black console resembles a PC more than it does a console at this point and could be an indication of the direction that Microsoft will be taking in the next generation of consoles, making them more like their PC brethren and less like the traditional console of yesteryear.
The developer that released the images was trying to sell the console for $10,000 and later stated that it was just a prank and more of a tease for people that would love to get their hands on the device. Developers across the gaming spectrum have apparently confirmed with website DigitalFoundry that the console in the pictures, is in fact the device they have been testing on.
Some details were revealed with the ‘hoax’ like the consoles ability to run on a 64-bit system and contains between 8GB and 12GB of RAM. This is simply to test out the new platform, the finished product could have substantially more memory when it is released. As of right now, developers have stated that the new Xbox will be able to run the famous DirectX 11 engine.
Microsoft has not commented on the images.
