Valve has issued a statement regarding security concerns over the hack on their Steam service back in November. It appears that there is a chance that encrypted customer payment information, which includes encrypted billing addresses and credit card numbers, may have been compromised.
Gabe Newell from Valve stated that during the ongoing investigation from November’s breach of security Valve has found, “the intruders obtained a copy of a backup file with information about Steam transactions between 2004 and 2008. This backup file contained user names, email addresses, encrypted billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. It did not include Steam passwords.”
There has been no confirmation that any payment information has been stolen, or that encoded information has been deciphered or used illegally. Newell warns all Steam users to watch for any unusual activity on their accounts for both Steam and their bank.
